Isuzu began in
1916 as a shipbuilding company with plans to produce automobiles. Truck
manufacturing followed two years later, and in 1936 Isuzu introduced the first
diesel-powered truck to the Japanese market. The Isuzu name comes from a river
near Japan's oldest shrine. The name Isuzu Motors Limited was adopted in 1949,
and Isuzu Motors America, Inc. was established in 1975. Today Isuzu's core
businesses are commercial trucks, diesel engines and SUVs.
