Saturn was
established as a subsidiary of General Motors in January 1985. The Saturn
concept began in 1982 in response to increasing import competition and an
adversarial relationship between union and management. From the start, the
company had clear aims to earn loyalty through commitment to customers. The
first production Saturn came off the assembly line in 1990. The "Different
Kind of Company" produces vehicles at its 4.6-million-square-foot
manufacturing and assembly site in Spring Hill, Tenn.
